You Wouldn’t Believe It Could Happen, But It Did…

What is a producer? A producer is a problem solver. What is an editor? An editor can “fix” the problem the producer couldn’t solve.

You wouldn’t believe it could happen, but it did...

We were filming a Dial A Santa series of commercials. After weeks of casting the “perfect” Santa, he showed up at the shoot very drunk! After 40 takes slurring his words, I was ready to quit when we realized that the big white beard masked his lips. We “fixed it in post” with a synched-up voiceover and a seamless sound mix!

We were filming a tv commercial for solar panels in Palm Springs, California. It was an “El Nino” year and it kept raining. We filmed between torrential downpours. In post-production, we removed the raindrops and turned the grey sky to blue.

We were filming a cubic zirconia earring commercial. The talent agency sent a beautiful model... but she was missing an earlobe. “The dog bit it off when I was a child,” she explained. I asked her, “Why would you try out for an earring commercial?” She answered, “My one earlobe is perfect!” It was and we sold earrings!

When we filmed Jack Lalanne, there was a handsome young twenty-something actor who did not have the stamina to keep up with the 89-year-old fitness icon. Every one of our squeaky prototype machines broke so we couldn’t finish filming all the scenes. Yet the commercial sold hundreds of thousands of machines.

Our dental whitening commercial featured the inventor, a professional dentist. Only after it successfully ran on national TV did we discover he had lost his license. “I didn’t think you were going to show it so many times in so many states.” We re-cut the spot sans doctor... and America enjoyed one of the first TV teeth whiteners!”

Every problem solved leaves us a little better prepared to solve the next problem. A team full of problem solvers and 40 years of problem- solution thinking!

Filming Safely During a Pandemic

Shooting commercials during the current crisis is challenging. Large camera crews, talent and production teams are unable to assemble. However, there are many ways in which a production company can still create commercials without creating a super spreader event.

Recycling old footage, using graphics for the entire commercial, creating animation, filming with an iPhone, and using stock footage from an online source are excellent production resources. We have even directed commercials remotely by Zooming talent and crews.

Use recycled footage to create a new opening or new product offer for an existing campaign. If new scenes are needed and you’re not a professional videographer, you can film using an iPhone on a 4K setting. Outdoor filming requires less lighting and is acceptable broadcast quality. When developing testimonials or product endorsements, producers send products to peoples’ homes and have the end users film their personal experiences on their iPhones. The director can even assist the end user via Zoom or simple FaceTime. Apple and other major brands have launched a series of commercials using these authentic clips of real people.

Using stock footage is another great way to create a commercial. There will be hours of online research involved in trying to select the best videos or stills for your commercial and there is a usage fee, but the quality is exceptional.

Another option is to produce commercials using all graphics or animation. A production company may also create its own YouTube channel, a popular platform. YouTube can provide a playlist with prior commercials organized by category like fitness, wellness, etc. New product introductions shot on an iPhone look more authentic.

Video-chatting has allowed us to “Zoom” cross country and international clients into our studio shoots. Clients can provide live feedback without risking travel. We produced various commercials by directing talent while they filmed scenes at home locations via video-chat. Get creative, stay safe and don’t let the pandemic stop you!

Today, The Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey unveiled their new 2019 anti-opioid campaign in Times Square.

The video billboard, created by Concepts Video Productions of Towaco, NJ, will be featured in Times Square and in mass transit outlets. The campaign features a man trapped in a prescription bottle with the headline: “In just 5 days, opioid dependency can begin.”

The pro-bono project was spearheaded by Drug-Free NJ’s Executive Director Angelo Valente and Concepts’ Creative Director Collette Liantonio, both NJ Ad Club Hall of Fame 2018 honorees. Heather Eyrich initiated the concept, Scott English art directed, Jon Calderaro was the actor/director, and Steve Miller executed visual effects and editorial. Rachel Leskanic produced the spot, working with Angela Conover of Drug-Free NJ. The entire video was filmed and edited at the new Concepts Studios in Towaco.

Collette Liantonio explained, “Each year we select a pro-bono project that will impact the world. The opioid epidemic and drug abuse has impacted me personally in a profound way.” Executive V.P. Jon Calderaro added, “We hope this highly visible effort will make an important difference in the fight against opioid and drug abuse.”

The Partnership For A Drug-Free New Jersey is the leading statewide organization dedicated to preventing substance abuse by raising awareness and educating through multimedia public service campaigns.

December is always a time for reflection, and Concepts TV is no exception. We’re looking back at the top products of 2018, and WOW, what a year!

  1. Egglettes

If you haven’t gotten your Egglettes yet, you may be the only person without one! Egglettes is absolutely the best product of 2018, and one of our all-time favorites. Need a healthy breakfast? Grab Egglettes. Need a quick lunch? Egglettes!

It’s super easy to use, just crack an egg in the silicone cup, cover and boil. In minutes, you have a delicious, nutritious meal. You can even add veggies to make custom omelets. It’s the easiest way to please every member of the family!

Click here to check out our Egglettes commercial.

  1. Blue Diamond

Copper is great, but a pan covered in diamonds?  Now that’s smart. Blue Diamond is the best in non-stick cookware. It has a 5x harder coating and it’s 10x longer lasting than traditional cookware. Plus it has 4x better heat transfer; that means more even cooking.

What’s one of the best parts of the Blue Diamond Pan you may ask? It’s pretty! It looks great on the stove, and shines even brighter in the oven.

Click here to check out the Blue Diamond Fry Pan.

  1. Eagle Eyes

Don’t you wish there were a pair of glasses you could wear to protect your eyes from the blinding sun light AND block your eyes from nighttime lights? Well look no further!  The Eagle Eyes Speed of Life glasses have night time lenses and a pop on sun lens.

The Eagle Eyes Speed of Life glasses are incredibly strong, you can even run a car over them without a scratch (I swear, look at our commercial for proof!). It’s pretty clear that they are the best in eyewear.

  1. Plink

Plink your sink and get rid of the stink! If that’s not the catchiest catch phrase, I don’t know what is. Plink is little tablets that quickly and easily clean out your garbage disposal and leave a fresh scent behind. All you have to do is drop the tablet into the sink, turn on the garbage disposal, and seconds later your sink smells like a tropical paradise.

Plink even has tablets for your washing machine, dishwasher, and shower drain. You can basically clean the entire house with Plink!

  1. Walkee Paws

Have you ever taken the dog for a walk in the rain? Does he ALWAYS come back with dirty paws that end up tracking mud through the house? Well this year we’ve found you a solution… it’s Walkee Paws, the only dog leggings on the market!

These incredible little leggings are comfortable while protecting your puppy from the weather. This product is so intriguing, even People Magazine wrote an article on it!

That’s a wrap on our best products of 2018. We are so grateful we got to produce all of these great digital campaigns and full commercials, and we’re looking forward to more incredible products in 2019!

Dimensions of the Social World

There are guidelines when it comes to image and video specs on social media platforms. Facebook for example, a profile image is recommended to be at least 180 x 180 pixels or images can appear to be distorted. A cover photo on Facebook is best uploaded at 820 x 310 pixels and anything less will appear to look stretched. When sharing images on Facebook, the recommend size is 1,200 x 630 pixels. Read more

Online Video: The Art of the Demo – Part II

The art of the demo has been around for hundreds of years. But how do you prove that one product is better than the rest? With the demonstration!

How-to Demo

Every top Facebook video or As Seen on TV Product knows that the demo sells the product. To create a good demo, think about creating something visually stimulating for a child. If you couldn’t explain a product in big words like you would to a fancy businessman or businesswoman, how could you show a child that the product works?

Let’s take for a knife for a product as an example. A child may know that a knife cuts through things, but they don’t understand the importance of a truly sharp knife. Children don’t understand how to cook; they don’t understand that a dull knife is dangerous, or that a sharp knife is every chef’s secret weapon. So how can you clearly and concisely show and not tell the benefits of a knife? To expertly demonstrate the sharpness and unique properties of the Bonzai knife, Concepts went to a public place and had ordinary people try the product for themselves. Concepts turned civilians into samurais and had ordinary people slice through hard to cut through items with one swoop.

Online Video: The Art of the Demo – Part I

While the landscape of media may be shifting from television to digital and social, there is one thing that will never change: the demonstration. The demo has been one of the most valuable tools for storytelling and advertising for over 100 years. After all, any good advertiser knows that the number one rule is: show, don’t tell.

The Art of the Demonstration

Seeing the Demo is Believing

This old adage is still very present in modern day advertising – no matter which platform it’s on. Any salesperson can strike up a reason as to why product A is better than product B, but that’s not believable. More so, if something isn’t believable (or true), then it’s not going to be purchased.

The demonstration clearly cultivates that aha-moment, the time when a spectator picks up the phone, a scroll turns into a click, or a viewer turns into a customer. Potential customers don’t want to be told why something works, they want to see it for themselves. Customers want to be able to make the decision themselves – not be told what to do. Let the product benefits do the talking through a clear demonstration.
